La Division Bell è la campana che nel Parlamento inglese richiama tutti ai propri posti in prossimità delle votazioni da effettuare – il titolo, pescato da un verso di “High hopes“, venne stabilito da un amico di Gilmour, lo scrittore Douglas Adams.
La campana, che in questa sede viene rintoccata, echeggia la fine di un’avventura leggendaria, quella dei Pink Floyd, che ci lasciano con un ultimo disco di inediti il cui tema portante non poteva che essere la comunicazione – o, meglio, le conseguenze della mancanza di essa.
E’ il 1985 quando Roger Waters lascia la band. Prima senza Barrett, poi privi di Waters – la domanda sorge spontanea: cosa ne rimane dei Pink Floyd? Questo album, secondo me eccessivamente sottovalutato da critici e presunti fan (relegato perchè “troppo commerciale”), emana un suono sottile, spontaneo, sobrio senza piombare nello scialbo o nel convenzionale (lo si evince nel suggestivo brano strumentale d’apertura “Cluster one“). In fondo, c’è da ricordare agli scettici che se i Pink Floyd hanno impresso il loro bollo nella storia della musica è anche per merito dei superstiti David Gilmour, Nick Mason e Richard Wright!
In “What do you want from me” la stratocaster di Gilmour urla più del suo padrone – è una canzone degna dello status di Pink Floyd (l’intro profuma di “Dark side“!), liricamente rabbiosa, tecnicamente ben vestita che, tra strilli chitarristici ed energici cori, si libbra sopra diversi generi senza mai trovar il tempo di planare.
La morbida “Poles apart” presenta una duplice velata dedica: la prima parte è tutta per l’indimenticato Syd Barrett (“did you know it was all going to go so wrong for you and did you see it was all going to be so right for me?“) mentre la seconda è indirizzata a Roger Waters (“hey you, did you ever realise what you’d become?“). Mason detta inizialmente un tempo a tratti cupo, schiacciante come il lungo interludio che spezza la canzone in due sezioni letteralmente agli antipodi, per poi sfociare in una melodia carica e veloce sovrastata dall’ennesimo apprezzabile assolo di Gilmour.
